We are responsible for the tax calculation platform and provide the core services that calculate the accurate amount of transactional taxes (sales tax and VAT) on Amazon. We thrive on providing the correct tax amounts to the customer at order time, and make sure audit records are stored safely to meet tax law requirements around the globe. Our challenges include staying on top of the complex and ever-changing global tax rates and laws as well as computing calculations correctly and quickly, thousands of times a second, and each one needs to be right.
Our systems perform calculations across all goods and services offered at Amazon, from retail and merchant items to digital downloads, Kindle eBooks and AWS services. Every aspect of our business interacts with our systems; if our systems are not up and running the company stops, and if we're not rapidly delivering new, easy to use features the whole company slows down. We're at the intersection of systems that can never go down, and need to move at agile, internet speed. We're the hub of Amazon's massive, worldwide service-oriented architecture.
We're looking to staff a new team in Hyderabad that will be exposed to the full array of services - the core calculation service, the very high end tax transactions on the back end, the generic rules engine for determining product tax codes, our calculation engines, storage/retrieval of seller and customer information, tax exempt support and self-service tools. The members of this new team will also own and become the domain experts for our VAT Invoice Service and VAT Invoice Number Service. These services are core back end services that construct tax documents needed to meet legal and financial compliance requirements for our customers and sellers.
We are looking for software engineers who thrive on complex problems and relish the challenge of operating complex and mission critical systems under extreme loads. Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree and/or Master's degree in Computer Science (or relevant equivalent)
• Proficiency in Java or C++ in a Linux or Unix environment
• Familiarity with Perl and SQL
